Fuel Tank De-Rusting with Rust Medic rust remover:

  • The first step in de-rusting a fuel tank is to ascertain the degree of rust you are dealing with.

If your fuel tank has light to medium rust with no sign of loose flaking or debris, you can simpl go straight to filling your tank with Rust Medic rust remover.

If your fuel tank has heavy rust and contains rust flaking or debris, a flush out with water will be necessary to remove as much of the loose material as possible. Swirling chains or nuts and bolts around inside a fuel tank is not advisable and will likely damage the tank further.

Please DO NOT use solvents or cleaning agents to clean your fuel tank before using Rust Medic rust remover.

  • There is no need to fill your tank completely with Rust Medic rust remover although this is the quickest and most efficient method. Simply fill the tank with enough liquid to completely immerse one side of your fuel tank. Leave each side to soak for at least 2-3 hours and turn repeatedly until all sides have been immersed. Extreme rust may require extended soaking times.

  • Drain your tank, but DO NOT throw away your used rust remover.

  • Check your tank for any residual rust.

  • If there are any remaining patches of rust, repeat the steps above.

  • If your tank is spotless, rinse with a product that will evaporate like acetone, methylated spirits or petrol. Once filled with petrol or diesel, your tank will remain rust free.

  • If your tank is not going to filled for an extended period, flush with diesel to create a protective barrier over the bare metal.

Your Rust Medic rust remover can be saved once emptied and re-used. Once your rust remover has been used, do not store it in an airtight container. A container with a lid is recommended but it must be able to breath (not sealed). Rust Medic rust remover will not damage petcocks, chrome or rubber seals, so most often all fittings can remain attached to your fuel tank.
